1. Move all furniture – tables, chairs, grills, planters, etc. off deck.
2. Remove loose debris – leaves, branches, etc. and sweep any loose dirt off the surface.
3. Wash down the surface. Using a pressure washer is ok, but keep the pressure below 1000 psi and keep the tip of the wand at least 12” off the deck surface.
4. Mix up the cleaning solution. We recommend Wood Cleaner from Saver Systems. It is a concentrated oxygen bleach cleaner that is biodegradable and safe to use. One 2.25 lb. container will make 5 gallons of cleaner. Mix well with warm water to activate the cleaner. Using a pump-up garden sprayer will speed up the cleaning process. Pour the mixed cleaner into the sprayer through a paint strainer to capture any undissolved particles that could stop up your sprayer.
5. Wet the surface with water, then apply a liberal application of the cleaner. Work in sections so that the cleaner does not dry. Keep the area wet by re-applying the cleaner solution for 10-15 minutes. Scrub the surface, then re-apply more cleaner, keeping it wet for 10-15 minutes. Scrub the surface, then rinse thoroughly. If not using a pressure washer, scrub the surface as you rinse to make sure to remove all of the dirt that the cleaner has loosened and emulsified.
6. After rinsing the cleaner off the surface, make up the brightener. One gallon of brightener concentrate will make 5 gallons of ready to use product. Apply the brightener to the wet surface, and keep it wet with brightener for 5 minutes.
7. Rinse the brightener off and allow the deck to dry for at least 1 or 2 good drying days before applying the finish of your choice.
